Little Terns come to nest in the dunes of Woolgoolga Back Beach in New South Wales, Australia between October and February each year.
I spent some time with them while they preened, rested, and flew about, escaping the Crested Terns and Silver Gulls around them.
They are small birds, around 22 - 28 cm in length; that's about half the size of the Great Crested Terns that appear in the video with them. They're even almost half the size of the seagulls!
